CORE Markets is pleased to announce the successful completion of the first ever transactions involving Safeguard Mechanism Credits (SMCs) in Australia's compliance carbon market.

The transactions involve the sale of 190k units of SMCs at A$34.00 per unit from a facility covered by the Safeguard Mechanism to undisclosed buyers.  This activity marks an important step in the evolution of the country's compliance market.

"This first ever trade of SMCs is an exciting step in the evolution of the Australian carbon market. It points to the market’s growth in terms of liquidity and transparency and shows the practical applications of SMCs as another tool for emissions reduction. I’m very proud of the team’s outstanding work in achieving this milestone,” said Marco Stella, Co-Founder and Head of Carbon and Renewables Markets at CORE Markets.

The Safeguard Mechanism, managed by the Clean Energy Regulator, aims to drive emissions reductions among Australia's largest greenhouse gas-emitting facilities in line with national targets. SMCs are tradeable credits representing one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2-e) emissions below a facility's baseline.
